We are lucky at Little Wonders to have an early years professional who is also a play therapist. Play Therapy is a specific conselling approach in which games, toys and mediums such as clay, drawings and paint are used to help a child or adolescent to express their emotions. As talking is an 'adult' language, it is difficult fro children to express how or what they are feeling with words, therefore children's natural language is imaginary metaphorical play.
How it works....
Within a a safe and trusting environment, the child is able to express themselves freely, they are not asked to explain their actions, only reflect their thoughts through a nin-directive and non-judgemental manner. It is very important that emotional and behavaioural problems are dealth with at an early stage. If left untreated these problems may cause your child and the family a gret deal of distress. By using unconstructed materials such as sand, water, paind, glue and clay, etc. along with miniture figures of people, animals trees, etc. the imagination is allowed free rein. Making a world in sand gives a child the opportunity of making sense of his or her pexeriences.
The Benefits....
Play is essentail for physical, emotional and social development, the child will gain confidence and concentration. Help them to understand and learn about their expanding environment. It will foster their imagination and creativity, and allows them to make mistakes safely, the most important feature of play therapy, is that it can be used when 'talking therapy' does not work.
